Our Reclaimed Process

In a region known for its historic buildings and communities, New England is a popular source for certain species of antique lumber that are frequently harvested from obsolete or antiquated buildings that have outlasted their intended purpose. Reclaimed lumber has a charm that lies in the rich history it carries, the sustainability it represents, and the sense of calm authenticity it brings to our homes and workplaces. Belletetes of Brookline (formerly Bingham Lumber) works with salvage professionals throughout the United States.  Our relationship with these companies allows us to reclaim all the wood components that went into originally building these structures. These recycled timbers, boards, joists and other wood fiber are brought directly to our Brookline, NH facility, where they are inspected and cataloged, keeping the history intact.  We use our 90 years of passed down sawmill experience to turn the recycled timber into various boards in a number of sizes to increase the yield. Once we have gained the maximum yield by manufacturing several different size boards, we optimize each piece into moldings, wainscot, flooring, millwork and furniture planks allowing the original textures and natural character to live another life in a new home. Reclaimed wood offers increased strength and durability. Much of the wood was harvested from virgin, old-growth timber, which had hundreds of years to grow denser and stronger–something that is mostly unavailable with freshly downed timber. Because of the process involved in the salvage and milling process reclaimed lumber is typically more expensive than traditional or “virgin wood”. Nevertheless, these venerable materials have found their home as decorated timbers, resized beams and mantels, flooring, fine furniture, cabinets, wall paneling and specialty millwork.
